The game utilizes a 'stop & shoot' feature that is known as 'turret' meaning demobilized. However, I have to strongly disagree when you say 'don't.excuse bad design' I think you must be misunderstanding. I enjoyed the originals but nowhere near as much as RE4, and I've played just about every shooter from 90s to around 2010. I was never a fan of 'health regen' for single player (its fine for multiplayer) but RE4 just captured me and drew me in the first time I played it. The original is a very tightly woven series of your most basic weapons for any shooter, 3rd or 1st person.
I am not a 'fanboy' of the RE series but I do consider RE4 a true ground breaker and well more balanced than most other shooters. This stuff was acceptable in the early 2000's because nobody had experienced it much, but this button mashing garbage is something only lazy designers and programmers do to try making unskippable cutscenes more 'exciting'.
